I suggest that u start googling on the subject and learn all that u come across ... there are a lot of online tutorials where u can get help for kernel development ... u could start at www.tldp.org then there's kernel.org ... there are a plethora of such articles .... but the best documentation u can get is the code ....
download the oldest version of linux ... the original one written by Linus ... its simple and easier to understand.... compile and run in a vm now for testing u'll need an virtualization software like vmware or xen. For that u can use Suse 10.1 which has virtualization built in .... so debugging will be easier.
