Dear All,

If we are looking forward for an entity which would
take up projects from corporate sector, I think the
platform of LUG is most inapt. I guess, this is the
reason for JJ suggesting formation of some thing of a
corporative society.

At the outset, I feel this may not be necessary. We
need not transform the LUG into a society, or even
plan an offshoot of the LUG for this purpose. At the
LUG, what we can look forward is to provide the
basics. Like, we need not think of a whole Linux
Distribution in malayalam. But we can look forward to
have Malayalam to be used in Linux. A proper Editor, a
bunch of good fonts. Then may be one of the popular
programs, like open office with malayalam menus. So
on. Later, when the time is ripe, the projects of
small nature as above would develop itself in to those
having wider and deeper implications.

What the community as a whole does need not be on a
commercial basis. Once the project is complete,
members themselves can take up the responsibility of
marketing the package so formed on commercial basis,
may be providing services as one of us was pointing
out... Thus, while retaining the non commerical
charector of the LUG, the projects at the LUG would
operate as an exposure to the members with skills in
each area and also at times become a source of
personal commerical background. I wonder, if the LUG
can decide that when the projects would be undertaken
under its banner without a commercial basis or
intentions, the members involved in the projects can
use the output on commercial basis, provided the open
source and free nature of the output of the project is
not disturbed.

If i remember, there were discussins a few years back
on institutionalising the LUG. There was a decision
not to. Even if there is a change in idea,
Co-operative society is the most hassle some of the
lot. Plan for a charitable society or Trust. That
should be simpler.
