Oh, yes, the number of messages in the left column is a wonderful fix.

I noticed I had to sign into iCloud, but it set up without a hitch. It also 
wants to do the mail upgrade. I'm glad I switched to iCloud from Gmail, or it 
might have taken Mail longer to do its thing.
