Alex, thanks. Yes the plan is to move the local folders to the gmail
account and then move them out of there on the Mac. Will clean things up
before the move then cross my fingers.

Mail should be fine. So long as you have an IMAP account, any folders you make
under that account will appear across all your devices. Locally stored folders
will not sync, so be sure to copy anything you need into folders under your
IMAP account and let everything upload.
