Is your hard drive NTFS? You can check this in disk utility. If it is, that 
would explain your problems - OS X can only read NTFS, but not write. If you 
want to write to your drive youw ill need to format it to a different 
filesystem, either HFS if you'll only be using it on macs, or FAT32/XFAT if 
you'll be using it on both mac and windows. The difference between FAT32 and 
XFAT is that FAT32 supports drives up to 2TB and one file can be up to 4GB in 
size. XFAT doesn't have those limitations, but it's only supported on XP SP3 
and up as well as OS X 10.6.6 and newer. And obviously, if you'll be 
reformatting the drive you'll first need to copy the files off of it before you 
do it since you'll lose everything otherwise.
