I’d plug in and then try to play your movie. I have found, at times, that if I make the mistake of trying to switch inputs on my AV receiver while playing an ITunes movie I bought, I sometimes get a warnning that the movie cannot be played on the device. So, I exit out of the attempt to play the movie and start it up and it plays fine. The trick is to make sure not to switch inputs while playing an ITunes bought or rented movie.
