One setting I find helpful system-wide is to use interact automatically when using tab key. The tab key doesn’t go to everything, but in areas like the preferences dialog of an app, it will make for easier navigation. You can find this setting by going into VOiceover preferences, VO-f8, choosing the navigation category, and finding the checkbox that says, “automatically interact when using tab key.”
