Abbyy FineReader Pro is completely accessible on the Mac and works great. It'll cost you around $90 - $100 U.S. As far as scanners go, There is a listing of supported scanners on the Abbyy.com website, and it is extensive. Basically, any scanner that apple sells for the mac is supported by finer reader. I use an Epson perfection series scanner with good result, which I picked up a few years back for $120.
