Why don't you Americans start writing your dates the right way around then you wouldn't have any problem. ;)
Seriously though, changing the date format in system preferences might solve some of your problems. If Mail displayed the received/sent date in the Australian format, then Karen would read it correctly. However, she would still mess up dates that are in the US format in other places.
