You have to create a bootable drive with a 8GB usb thumb stick, or a USB external drive that has been partitioned. I have done it twice, and it is really quite easy. Let me know if you need any help. My contact info is below.

If you want to upgrade and not do a clean install all you have to do is go to the software update and tell it to install Maverick. It is wise to backup first but it seems to be a very safe installer.
