I don't know if Audacity can work with MP3 files directly or if you have to decode them to something like wave format. Transcoding files from MP3 to wav and back again will ruin the audio and should be avoided at all cost.
One program that will work directly with MP3 files without any transcoding is Fission which is sold by the fine folks over at Rogue Ameba, the same people who develop Audio Hijack Pro.
