Hi, You can determine how the drive is formatted by navigating to it while in the Finder, then press cmd-i to Get Info on it. It will tell you everything you need to know and more. If you do a Google search on writing to NTFS from a Mac, you'll get a number of responses that can help. If you're comfortable with Terminal and the command line, this article introduces an interesting solution:
