I don't know if this is the only way to use Airdrop, but I launch it on both computers, open up a finder window on the source machine, find the file(s) that I want to transfer, do a [VO] [shift] [m] on the file (bringing up a context menu) and then choose Airdrop from the Share menu. You will then be asked to confirm the action on the destination machine.
