I think to begin with, if it were me, I would start out with something simple. 
Then you can decide if you need something more complicated later. You should be 
able to start out using textEdit. 
As for playing DVDs, The older Mac computers like mine that was bought a 2011 
have a slot on the right-hand side to put your DVD is. If yours doesn't, you 
would need to get an external drive for doing that. However, once you put the 
DVD in, the default is to bring up iTunes. If you have anymore questions,
