How does one configure VMWare to run optimally? Does the help system go into
detail about this? I'm mean cores, memory, etc - all the settings that
affect how the virtual machine will run etc.

Nick is correct, but if you have 8gb or more of ram you should be fine.
Also, the Mac will only have less power while the VM is running; once you
get used to the Mac and don't use Windows as much, you can close the vm
while not in use and free up those resources.

Also, just one note, while VM Fusion does have a lot of advantages over a
duel boot system, the downside is, as I understand it, that you then have
less power running that operating system. The quad core processors of the
iMac should be able to handle this fairly well, but it might be another
reason for upgrading the RAM. Particularly if you use any memory intensive
applications. Otherwise, your computer is essentially running two
operating systems at once and that, I'm guessing, is quite resource
intensive. That said though, you might decide this is worth it for the
simplicity of using the virtual machine (i.e. VM Fusion).
