Hi all, Donna's post about the Nest thermostat made me realize that August might have the same problems.
The August Smartlock (www.august.com) is a $200 attachment for your deadbolt lock. It uses bluetooth to scan for devices; if it finds one, and that device has a valid "key" on it, the lock disengages automatically. Imagine walking up to your door with your hands full; instead of you fumbling with keys, your phone has already sent a valid code to the lock, which retracts your deadbolt for you, without you even removing your phone from your pocket or purse. Open the door and you're in! It runs on batteries, and will notify you when they need to be changed, and it even makes sounds in addition to showing lights when it locks or unlocks. Management is done online or with the associated app - sending and revoking access codes, reviewing logs, and so on. The lock is not launching until later this year, so the apps will likely still be in development. That means that now is the perfect time to advocate for accessibility to the company, so we can be sure the app and website are accessible when the product launches. Email i...@august.com to ask them to make their service fully accessible upon launch. I have not yet done this, but I will be doing so tonight or tomorrow. If you are at all interested, I encourage you to do the same. If possible, you could even offer to beta the app to be sure it is as vo-friendly as it can be. Thanks.
