Yeah, I got it figured out I found the Close all windows option so did that and then restarted Mail; I always forget how to bring back windows after closing them all. So I just restart the program. thanks for suggesting the command-F1 key.
I'll have to look at the dock next time I manage to do this. In my case, the window got maximized and I couldn't shrink it down or minimize. closing them all was the only solution.
