Other tricks that have worked for me are to click on the trackpad randomly wherever it happens to be, and just typing my password and pressing return/enter even though I get no keyboard sound in response. Sometimes I press Command-F5 to turn VoiceOver off. This does nothing at first. After around five minutes I press Command-F5 again and it successfully turns VoiceOver off. Then I press Command-F5 again to turn VoiceOver on and everything works as it should.
