Try the df -k command in terminal and verify what it says about free space.
You can also try the following command du -s * | sort -n This command tells you the size of every file/folder in the current directory and sorts them by size so the largest is at the bottom. One other question did you check the size of the Trash? Unlike Windows Macintosh computers usually do not auto-empty the trash/recycle bin.
