Well, I've never really gotten behind the whole voscan idea. I'm not really sure how it works, other than it seems too modular an approach to be effective for most of my clients.
My only issue with the epson 4490 is you have to hit the next button over and over again for each page of a multi-page scan. So, doing a book you'd have to flip and press, flip and press. But then finereader will automatically process all the pages of the book and thump the result into preview or text edit depending on whether you asked for it in pdf or rtf. Can't beat it really. Especially for the price.
