Quicknav must be off to do much editing, which is why I tend to leave it off almost all of the time.
The cursor is not like on windows; I find it easiest to think of the insertion point as being between two characters, rather than under any character. As you arrow along, vo reads out which character (or word) the cursor passed to get to its new location. So, take the word "apple". If you start at the a and arrow right, you would hear "a" as the cursor passed under the a to settle between the a and the p. Another press of right arrow reads "p", because the cursor went past the first p to land between the two Ps in the word. Next you'd hear another p, then an l, then an e. Arrowing left will read the e again, since the cursor backs up, passing the e to get between it and the l. Hopefully this makes more sense.
