Part of the trouble is that many of us check our email more than once or twice a day, so we may have long since deleted a message to which a reply has just arrived. This means that, often, the message is confusing with no context, and the only way to get that context is to read the original message the new one quotes. I agree that message rules are a good way of dealing with high-traffic lists. I've set up a filter in gMail to send apple-related messages to my apple folder, so I just open mail on the mac, hit cmd-2 (I've put the folder in my favorites), and am presented with all the apple mail I have received. This is, I find, a much better solution than digest mode, since I can respond to any message yet still keep my inbox less cluttered.
