VO-J can also be used
        • in Skype and Messages to jump between the conversation HTML
area and the edit field to type instant messages;
        • in NewsRack to jump between the table of feeds, the table of
articles and the HTML area displaying the selected article; and
        • In Finder to jump between the sidebar and browser.

I'm sure there's many more but those are just a few. Basically if an app has
one list or table which changes the content of some other area or list then
VO-J will probably work to jump between these two. You don't need to have
interacted to use VO-J and it automatically interacts with the "linked" item.
Unfortunately VO-SHIFT-J doesn't work to jump backwards.

Having said all that, I don't often use it myself except for in News Rack. Not
sure why this is.
