Hello Nicholas, I work also with a macbook air and I have the same problem. I think that your problem is the case for most MacBooks. What you can do is: configure the trackpad that you can activate the functions of voiceover that you should normally do with the right voiceover keys. Since you can more easily activate the trackpad with both hands, this could be perhaps a solution.
If you need assistance how to assign functions to you trackpad , mail me or the list. Otherwise, you can buy a external keyboard but your configuration isn't that portable anymore.
