It sounds like you are pressing command, not control. Command is immediately adjacent to the spacebar on any Apple keyboard, control is on the left side, second in (past function). On a Windows-style keyboard control is on both the outer left and outer right, below each shift key, while command is second in from the left and (normally) third in from the right.
