Hi, You'll need to have QuickNav on in order to only use arrow keys when in the Status menu widgets.
Another method you could use is to get to the Time Machine menu with VO, press VO-cmd-f5 to bring the mouse and the VO cursor together, then hold down only the Option key while pressing down the Trackpad as a sighted user would do. This will bring up the Verification options you're mentioning. One thing to note, though, is that this Verification process usually happens when Time Machine begins its backup process each hour anyway so it will usually let you know if there are any problems.
