As Mark said, you probably have it set so you need the function key to be 
pressed to issue commands involving the f keys. You can change this in keyboard 
preferences so that the f keys will perform their special tasks (brightness 
volume, all that) either only when the function key is pressed, or only when it 
is not. If it were me, I'd set things so the function key is needed to envoke 
the special commands, so I would not need to press it when issuing vo or system 
commands.
