I agree that captchas are not a very good solution, though there are not really 
many viable alternatives out there. Some places make you do a simple math 
problem, like 3 + 4 or something like that, but if a bot knows the nature of 
the captcha requested, it could easily perform any math asked for. Others are 
more complex, but are generally in image or flash so no more useful to blind 
people.

I appreciate Buddy Brannan's mention of ZCaptcha. Of course I am biased, but i 
believe it is one of the only universally viable solutions out there, though as 
you mentioned it is unfortunate that blind people must pay where sighted people 
do not. Perhaps the technically inclined among us can pull our resources and 
think of other possible solutions that would be at least just as effective as 
captchas at blocking out spam bots.

The other side to this is that captchas are not always good at blocking spam 
either. I run a VBulletin forum, and though we have employed captchas in the 
past, we still got just as much spam as without. So, captchas are forced to 
become more complex, while spam bots seem to easily keep up with the demand.
