Now I might be wrong but I believe that it is a small pop up window that gives us the name of the contact visually.. They go away only after a few seconds. By the time you switch to Skype and hit the window chooser it has already gone away. Personaly I find that hearing if a contact has gone online or offline is quite annoying so I turn them off in the Preferences.
