I only ever got this to work once, and trying to set a webspot so I could come back to where I left off crashed Safari. Ever since then all my attempts to open xml books in Safari end in frustration and no books. So, I don't think it is something new in 10.8.2, I think it is some bug or setting that has been around longer.
