I recently wrote up a method for performing detailed clip editting in iMovie. It is a featured article on www.htb2.com I don't know if it's what you're looking for, but any information is useful and helpful when dealing with some of these apps. I don't much like iPhoto either and avoid it mostly, but I use iMovie alot and am glad to be of help if I can.
