One thing to keep in mind here is that this will not work if you get rid of the preview pane. The up side is that you can arrow past messages without having them automatically be marked as read; the down side is that you will have to open them with cmd-o and close them with cmd-w (enter seems to work to open as well) and cannot delete right from the text. It's a trade-off however you slice it. About the sorting of columns: I don't know, but if you get an answer, please share it with the list as I'd love to re-order a few things.
