Jane, Don't know why that happened. I have redeemed two gift cards on my account at separate times, and I had a credit card on the account as well. All purchases came out from the gift card balance before hitting the credit card.
The only difference was that I redeemed my card a few days before I purchased anything... just worked out that way... but that should not make a difference. If anyone else knows why this happened, I hope they chime in. Otherwise, I would make a call to Apple on this one.
