Hi kirsten, i'd say that Apple mail is one of the best mail clients i've used. I'd used outlook 2003 for a while, but didn't really like it, that was back when i was on Windows though. WHat it sounds like to me, from what you're describing, is that you have two accounts set up in mail, or that you've set up the same account twice? I'd take a look in Mail, preferences, accounts, to see if somehow, you may have done that. ? Also, to get new mail, you can just hit command-shift-N. HOpe this helps.
