Thanks, Alex for such a swift reply. The desperate thing was though that the 
disk was not showing in the finder anywhere and I wasn't able to perform the 
eject command. I have just done a mad search on the internet, and initially it 
seemed from other people's experience that nothing else would do but a hammer. 
And then suddenly somebody posted a solution: I went to disk utility and found 
the super drive in the table of volumes and under file menu, I found the eject 
option. It worked!!! I am so relieved. I've only recently spent £70 on the 
super drive.
