Hi there! Thanks to Chris's suggestion on this list, I simply went back to Growl version 1.22F or whatever it was called. It's the last version that put growl in system preferences. Anyway, I only stopped using that because I somehow got the impression that it didn't work with lion. Well, to make a long story a bit shorter, it seems to be working beautifully under Mountain Lion, so unless there's a very compelling reason to update it at a later date, I'm planning to just keep that version; it does what I need it to do, and as long as it works, that's good enough for me.
