That' is probably the problem.  I've only switch between the Mac and
the iPod a few times and I usually made sure I was either logged out
of the Mac for the iPod to get it and I thought I usually could
connect to the Mac as long as the iPod was at least in screen lock.
Maybe I need to turn the iPod completely off if I want to use it with
the Mac? I'll need to play with this a bit more to have conclusive
results.  That's where a nice shortcut to toggle bluetooth on and off
would be nice for the iPod; I believve there is an app to do that now.
 Then I might be able to switch back and forth more easily without
having to power anything down.

Of course, I could go out and buy a second Braille display <hahahahaha>.
