Actually, that didn't work for me.  I wondered why that behavior
reverted on my setup recently.  I had to move the mouse pointer on to
that vertical slider and double click the physical mouse to close the
preview pane permanently.  With VO keys, I could position the mouse
with VO-Command-F5.  I then tapped the Option key 5 times to enable
"Mouse keys" and then double tapped the 'i' key.  Esther wrote a
beautiful message a while ago concerning the preview pane in Apple
mail.

I'm using Lion with most recent version of Mail in the modern view.  I
have it working the way I want again.
