Hello Andrew, I don't know if you're referring to a Mac OS or Windows but in either instance, you may now delete your .ME account.
For some reason, I think my Mac automatically switched from a .ME to iCloud but it was a while ago so cannot be certain. It's a little confusing but do not worry, as long as your iCloud is up and running, you are good to go.
