Hi all, have recently done a disc repair but it still happens. To the person who suggested that I was using IMAP, that could well be the reason because when setting up my two accounts with apple mail, by default it chose IMAP and if they have problems at times then that's probably why its slow. I wouldn't of thought that IMAP was slower than POP3 but thanks for the theory!
