Take a look at the connection  doctor window in mail. If that can access your 
gmail accounts, then it is probably an issue 
with take account online or else it could be that the account is still trying 
to do an initial syncronization between what is on the computer and what is on 
the GMAIL servers.

I can probably help you understand the connection doctor, though I am not a 
consistent reader of macvisionaries at this time, so write me directly if you 
have more questions.
