There is no WRONG time to interact, unless what you're trying to do is outside the scope of the portion of the window you're interacting with at the moment. To interact, press VO Shift Down-arrow, and to stop interacting, press VO Shift Up-arrow. Just that simple. If interacting yields you no significant results, stop interacting and try something else.
