To each their own, I suppose. I personally like having all my music in one
central location, so I don't have to sift through billions of folders an a
hard drive to find what I want to listen to, I just sort it by artist and
album and I'm good to go. It's not cluttered for me in the least.

Explain what you find to be cluttered?

For my part, I cannot quarrel with ITunes as a player. It's the library
part that sucks. I agree with Alison's complaint, and, have one to add. I
just hate the way ITunes tries to be smart and organized your stuff for you.
Yes, I have the keep folders organized check box unchecked, but, it still
puts things where I don't want them and cannot find things as quickly as I'd
need to. I don't think it's a blindness issue either. Sighted users are
beginning to be fed up with what ITunes has become. You should see the
latest editorial in Mac World about it. High time Apple gave us a nice,
simle, fully accessible player with the store section, (I do like the store
part) but without the blasted too complex to be truly useable library. I
just hate the way that ITunes has become so damn library dependant.

Thanks so much for sharing this Eric. I'm going to check out vlc as an

alternative player. I like quick look, but there don't seem to be any player

controls.

Hi Alison and others,

Well, it looks like I am wrong. I will post below the info I saved from a

message from Esther. It seems like the solution is to change the default

player to something else. In my case I use Amadeus Pro. This gives me

controls for play back without needing to add the track to iTunes. I also

learned from Esther about quick look and use that often.

I think other listers have all ready given this advice.

One other tip. If I accidentally do play something in iTunes that I want

to delete I usually go to my recently added play list or my zero rated play

list. to find and delete it.

Sorry to get your hopes up.

Esther's directions on how to change the default player are excellent and

that alone makes this post worth keeping for future reference!

below is Esther's post that helped me with this iTunes issue.

Hi Eric,

You can play tracks without adding them to your iTunes library if you

QuickLook them by pressing space bar instead of opening them in an app.

This obviously does not work for DRM protected apps, since iTunes is

required to validate the DRM (e.g. with audiobooks purchased from Audible or

the iTunes Store, movies, really old iTunes Music tracks that were purchased

before they moved to DRM-free purchases, etc.) Other than that, you can set

the default app to open mp3 files, for example, to be something other than

iTunes (e.g., VLC, QuickTime Player, etc.). Just select an mp3 track, and

use Command-I to bring up the "Get Info" window. Use item chooser (VO-I)

to navigate to the "Open with" option: specifically VO-Right arrow to the

pop up button for the application, VO-Space, then select the app you want

other than iTunes (e.g. QuickTime Player or VLC). If you then VO-Right

arrow past the pop up, there's an option to "Use this application to open

all documents like this on

e." followed by a "Change All" button that you can press (VO-Space) before

closing the get info window with Command-W.

I think that as long as iTunes is the default app for opening a file, it

adds the new entries to its library. Just QuickLook the file instead of

opening it if you don't want it to be added to iTunes.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Alison and others,

There is a way to set up iTunes so it does not automatically add

files when played. I learned how to do it from Esther quite som time ago.

It has been a long time so I'll have to search my notes to find how to do

it. I remember it was not hard to do but it was also not obvious by any

means.

So, there is a way but I'll have to get back to you unless
someone

else does.

Sorry this is only half a answer but I wanted you to know there is a

way. I also usually use quick look by pressing the space bar. However,

sometimes I want the iTunes controls and it is nice to open a file in iTunes

and not have to find and delete it later.

Hi everyone!

I recently got a beautiful new Macboook pro, and find myself using it

more than my pc because it's so portable. I'm wondering if there's a way to

tell iTunes not to add every file I play to my iTunes library. Sometimes I

just want to select a file in the finder, play it once, and exit without it

being added. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
