I'm unfamiliar with the steps involved in writing and running a script.
However, if I could link this script to a Keyboard Commander shortcut, that
would be perfect.

I'm assuming I write a file with such commands as
tell application "mail" to open

and then place that file somewhere, or change its permissions such that it
executes instead of opens to an editor? I'm intrigued; thanks.
