the windows .AVI file format is supported under quicktime but requires a series
of extensions. you will need the following component and here is the website
address. the product in question is called Flip4Mac and is a free download as a
player, however you can purchase the different systems if you want to edit,
author or convert within quicktime through these extensions.

http://dynamic.telestream.net/downloads/download-flip4macwmv.asp?prodid=flip4macwmv

download and install this.

it is however worth noting that every so often, updates are constantly
available and updating through flip4mac in system preferences forces you to go
to the website to download a fresh installer rather than inbuilt updating
functions.

another component worth installing to work in tandem is this"

Perian. this is another quicktime extension for certain non mac file formats.

web address:

http://perian.org/

this is a free extension as it's under open source.

perian is easy to install. just run it and it will ask to install to the system
preferences window as a pref extension. enable to all users if your system has
multiple accounts. then use your admin password to install.
