OK, just tried it again. Used search to find Windows Anytime Upgrade.
Started it, it said before you can upgrade you need to activate the edition
of Windows your computer is currently running.
How do I get around this to do the "repair" upgrade I need to do before I
can activate with my upgrade key?

What you do is upgrade your edition to the same edition, affectively doing a
repair install. Then you can use your key to activate the software.
