This gesture is a little tricky to get right but it does work. For best results I find it is easier to find the particular episode you want to delete by dragging your finger around the screen rather then swiping. This way you can find where on the screen the podcast episode is. Then do the passthrough gesture on the left of the screen and swipe right. It's supposed to be like drawing a line through the episode as though you were crossing it out. Once you hav \e performed this, do a swipe to the right to find the confirm delete button.
I'm not saying you have to do it as I described but this is how I find deleting things works best for me.
