Hello Shai, to see wether a message is read or unread in the classic layout is not possible. That's because in the moment you set your keyboard focus to the new message it is already read. To see wether an e-mail has attachements activate the attachement column in the view menue. There you can find even more possibilities to show up.
For you as a beginner I'd recommend at first to work with Textedit and see if it suits your needs. Then you could think of a more advanced word processor. You can find Textedit in the programs folder in the finder. Just press CMD + Shift + A to open it. Or it might already be in the Dock.
