Did he format it with Mac Extended Journaling? I think TM requires the
extended journaling.

Subject: can't get time machine to backup

Greetings and happy 2012,

I cannot get time machine to backup. It starts the process then somewhere
down the way I get a alert stating that time machine cannot backup. It also
says that the problem may be temporary.

I am running the most updated version of snow leopard. I originally had
time machine backing up to a different external hard drive. However, in
November the external hard drive stopped working. So, I asked for a
external hard drive for Christmas and got one. My husband set it all up and
my mac book was backed up on December 25th. All day yesterday I tried to
get time machine to do the backup and it just would not do. The hard drive
is a one terabyte usb external hard drive. My hubby had to format the hard
drive when we first tried to use it on the 25th.

Thanks for any help as to what the problem may be. I have tried all of the
simple things I can think of like restarting my mac. :)

Christina
