Did he format it with Mac Extended Journaling? I think TM requires the extended journaling.

All day yesterday I tried to get time machine to do the backup and it just would not do. The hard drive is a one terabyte usb external hard drive. My hubby had to format the hard drive when we first tried to use it on the 25th. Thanks for any help as to what the problem may be.
