Yup, in this particular case Andy was compressing an MOV file so it seemed likely that QT Player would open it. AVI is such a weird thing. It's a container but inside can be any number of pieces of media using any number of codecs. Due to it's age (1992) and Microsoft pedigree it's been pretty much a Windows format with some limited access on other platforms through things like Perian. It also can't handle some of the newer video codecs like MPEG4 so over time it should fade away. I mostly find AVIs on Windows-centric sites or old media files.

Hi.
That doesn't always work. Quicktime has to recognize the video format first. I
can't seem to get it to take most avi files.
That's why I like handbrake. It recognizes stuff I've never even heard of
before.

Doesn't QuickTime Player already do this using the Export (command-E)? You can
pick what kind of conversion from a popup menu and one of them is Movie to
iPhone. There is an Options button which lets you configure more stuff for the
video and sound encoding but I had to do a simulated mouse click on it to get
it to pop up. Likewise for the video and sound buttons.

Hey all, I am looking for a way to compress videos down in size
hopefully to h.264, - have looked in the app store but the one I
think I need is £35 and I dont even know if it is accessible. I am
trying to compress an MOV file to an mp4 for iPhone but I dont think
handbraek will do this. Maybe someone could put me right if it does,
that would be fantastic. alternatively a free or low ish cost
application would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Andy.
